Birdcage Windsor Side Chair
Windsor chairs have been made in America since the second quarter of the 18th century. At first, they were generally painted dark green and used as outdoor furniture. Later, they were found in both the simplest farmhouses and the largest estates, in every region of the country. Our chairs are copies of originals made in Boston, circa 1800-10. They are called "birdcage" Windsors because of the double bow in the crest. Windsor chairs are light in form, but rugged in construction. The seat is Eastern white pine. Turnings are clear hard maple. Spindles and bows are wedged solidly together.
